Sudan’s head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, arrived in Port Sudan City on Friday, the capital of the Red Sea state in eastern Sudan.
Sources close to the Sovereignty Council in Khartoum have stated that al-Burhan, who inspected military areas in Omdurman on Thursday, for the first time since the start of the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April, travelled by land from Omdurman to Atbara in the Nile River state and inspected the artillery forces’ headquarters.
Reports indicate that al-Burhan is expected to leave for Cairo next week to hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is leading Sudan’s neighbouring countries’ initiative to resolve the Sudanese crisis.
The sources clarified that al-Burhan will move from Cairo to Riyadh to hold discussions with the Saudi leadership, which, along with the United States, is hosting the Jeddah Forum for negotiations between the Sudanese army and the RSF. The talks will focus on revitalizing the forum after negotiations stalled in recent weeks.
Since Sunday, the RSF has launched a fierce attack from multiple fronts on the Armoured Corps camp in the Al-Shajara area in the southern part of the capital, Khartoum.
