Sudan: Democracy mechanism unveils project to end conflict

The National Mechanism for Democratic Transition (NMDT) on Saturday unveiled a national project aimed at ending Sudan’s ongoing civil war and paving the way for a permanent constitution.

The NMDT is a coalition of Sudanese political parties, civil society organizations, and religious leaders. It was formed in 2022 with the goal of supporting the democratic transition in Sudan and promoting peace and reconciliation.

The project, which was presented at a press conference in Port Sudan by NMDT Executive Office Head Professor Montaser Zain Al-Abidin, calls for a comprehensive, inclusive, and peaceful solution to the conflict.

Al-Abidin said that the war is not in the best interests of Sudan and its people, and that the only way to achieve security and stability is through dialogue and compromise.

The project includes a number of key provisions, including:

  • The formation of a national emergency government to oversee the implementation of the peace plan.
  • The integration of all armed groups into the Sudanese Armed Forces under a mutually agreed upon framework.
  • The drafting of a new constitution that guarantees the rights of all Sudanese citizens.
  • Al-Abidin said that the NMDT is committed to working with all stakeholders to achieve a just and lasting peace for Sudan.

“This is a historic opportunity to end the war and build a better future for all Sudanese,” he said. “We call on all parties to come together and work towards a peaceful resolution.”

The NMDT’s plan is the latest attempt to end Sudan’s civil war, which has been raging for over a decade. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions more.

It remains to be seen whether the NMDT’s plan will be successful, but it offers a glimmer of hope for a nation that has been ravaged by conflict for too long.
