Sudan fighting rages despite Ramadan plea

Renewed fighting erupted in Sudan’s capital Khartoum on Monday, March 11th, defying calls for a ceasefire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Eyewitnesses reported clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in locations south, east of Khartoum, and north of Bahri city.

The violence also spread to Omdurman, west of Khartoum.

The Sudanese military claimed their forces destroyed seven RSF military vehicles and two oil trucks north of Bahri.

Reports suggest casualties on the RSF side, but there has been no official confirmation from the RSF.

This development comes just days after the UN Security Council voiced their strong urging for an immediate pause in hostilities for the duration of Ramadan.

Sudan has been embroiled in a bloody conflict since April 2023, pitting the military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, against the RSF.

The year-long fighting has displaced over eight million people and claimed the lives of at least 13,900 according to UN estimates.

Several ceasefire attempts brokered by regional and international actors have failed to quell the violence.
