
In Wad Madani city, the capital of Al-Jazira state in central Sudan, medical sources sound the alarm, reporting hundreds of cholera cases, including at least seven fatalities, in the emergency departments of hospitals and treatment centers.
The medical sources affirmed that the situation is catastrophic and on the verge of collapse. Health disasters, including the cholera epidemic, dengue fever, and malaria, pose a grave threat to Al-Jazira state. The state is witnessing a massive influx of displaced people fleeing the horrors of war in Khartoum. Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira state, is approximately 181 km south of Khartoum.
Hospitals are experiencing an unprecedented influx of patients amidst a decline in healthcare services and prolonged interruptions in water and electricity supply within the hospitals.
Some residents say that some patients are forced to rent beds to place them in hallways or outdoor courtyards for treatment due to overcrowded rooms and wards.
Health authorities swiftly prepared a dedicated ward for isolating cholera and acute watery diarrhea patients at the Emergency Hospital in Wad Madani. They also instructed the preparation of similar isolation rooms in other hospitals.
The Ministry of Health in Al-Jazira state affirmed that chlorination campaigns will continue to cover markets, residential areas, and shelter centers.
The Sudan Doctors Union affirmed that the official data significantly underestimates the suspected cases at homes due to significant logistical challenges in the screening system.
