Sudan faces the threat of becoming a failed state as armed groups proliferate and civil society disintegrates, warns Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council.
With the ongoing 19-month conflict between General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), smaller ethnic militias are reportedly targeting civilians. Over 10 million people have been displaced, with millions on the brink of starvation, as aid efforts falter.
Egeland described the crisis as the “biggest humanitarian emergency” globally, blaming starvation tactics and underfunded aid programs. He urged global investment in Sudan to prevent a worsening refugee crisis, as peace talks remain unproductive.
