Sudanese army chief departs for NY to attend UN General Assembly

Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, headed to New York in the United States this morning as the leader of the Sudanese delegation participating in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He was seen off at Port Sudan International Airport by the Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Malik Aqar Ayre, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali Yusuf, the Secretary-General of the Sovereignty Council, and several ministers.

Al-Burhan is scheduled to deliver Sudan’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, September 22. He will also participate in meetings to discuss enhancing multilateral cooperation on various international and regional issues.

On the sidelines of the 78th session, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council will meet with various heads of state from around the world and representatives of international and regional organizations to discuss bilateral cooperation and the role of multilateral cooperation within the framework of the United Nations in building a more stable future.

More than 140 world leaders and representatives are taking part in this year’s General Assembly session, which began on Tuesday.

This is the seventh foreign trip of Al-Burhan, who is also the army chief since war broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April. He previously visited Egypt, South Sudan, Qatar, Eritrea, Uganda and Türkiye.
