Sudan’s army says retook control of national radio, TV

In a development that could further escalate tensions in Sudan, the military announced on Tuesday that it had retaken control of the national radio and television headquarters in Omdurman.

The headquarters, located across the Nile River from the capital Khartoum, had been under the control of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.

The Sudanese army’s statement did not elaborate on how the takeover transpired, and there has been no official response from the RSF.

This development comes amidst renewed clashes between the army and the RSF on Monday, despite international calls for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan.

The UN Security Council issued a resolution on Friday urging all parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities and engage in dialogue to find a lasting solution.

Sudan has been embroiled in a bloody power struggle since April 2023, pitting the military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, against the RSF.

The conflict stems from disagreements over the country’s transition to civilian rule following the 2019 overthrow of former president Omar al-Bashir.

According to the United Nations, at least 13,900 people have been killed and over eight million displaced due to the ongoing violence.

Several attempts at brokering a ceasefire, including those spearheaded by Saudi Arabia and the United States, have proven unsuccessful.
