A report on Saturday detailed the swearing-in of Kamil Idris as General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-controlled government’s new prime minister.
Al-Burhan had issued a constitutional decree on May 19, appointing Idris to the position of prime minister.
According to the Sudanese news agency SUNA, Idris took his oath of office before al-Burhan.
The ceremony was also attended by Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali Youssef, the head of the judiciary in the Red Sea State, who represented the Chief Justice.
Prior to Idris’s appointment, Dafallah Al-Haj Youssef, Sudan’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, had been serving as the minister of Cabinet affairs and prime minister caretaker.
Burhan had initially established a transitional government in April 2019 following a military coup that removed Omar al-Bashir.
This government was succeeded by the Transitional Sovereignty Council in August 2019, and the Sovereign Council subsequently took power in November 2021.
Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a violent conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group and Burhan’s army vying for control, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.
The United Nations and local authorities report that over 20,000 people have been killed and an additional 15 million have been displaced due to this ongoing conflict.
