Sudan’s Kassala women trained in bakery skills to promote peace

Last month, young women from Kassala participated in a two-week training workshop on food processing and bakery skills.

Despite their diverse tribal backgrounds, they pledged to train other women in their communities.

After completing the training, they received startup kits with ovens, utensils, flour, and oil to help them start their own businesses while spreading their newfound skills.

These community actors play a crucial role in fostering social cohesion, which is essential for building durable peace.

By creating networks of support, these women help bridge divides and combat polarization, laying the groundwork for a stable future.

The workshop is part of the Strengthening Capacities for Peace and Social Cohesion project, a joint initiative by UNDP Sudan, UNICEF, and the UN Peacebuilding Fund.

The project aims to reduce violent conflict and enhance social cohesion, contributing to social stability and sustainable development.

The project focuses on de-escalating tensions and preventing violent conflicts in five localities across two states. It strengthens community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, promoting inclusive dialogue and mediation to build lasting peace.

Significant progress has been made, including establishing Community-Based Reconciliation Mechanisms (CBRMs) and holding dialogues to address hate speech.

The project prioritizes women’s participation, with high representation in CBRMs, dialogues, and peace ambassador training. Women make up a significant portion of the participants, ensuring their role in future peace initiatives.
