Sudan’s RSF downs warplane belonging to Burhan’s forces

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Thursday that they had shot down a warplane belonging to General al-Burhan’s Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its “extremist allies linked to the former regime.”

The RSF stated that the aircraft had been dropping barrel bombs on civilians in various cities across Sudan. The wreckage was found scattered to the east of El Fasher.

Supported by “extremist backers from the National Congress Party” and allied mercenaries, the SAF has relentlessly bombed El Fasher, dropping over 20 barrel bombs daily, according to the RSF.

This onslaught has resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths and widespread destruction of infrastructure and homes.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the ruling Sovereign Council, and the RSF. Since the conflict began in April 2023, at least 13,900 people have been killed, and more than eight million displaced, according to UN figures.

Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators have failed to end the violence.
