Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has welcomed an invitation from U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to participate in upcoming ceasefire talks.
Dagalo announced on social media that these crucial discussions are scheduled for August 14, 2024, in Switzerland, aiming to find a lasting solution to end the Sudanese civil war.
These talks follow the UN-sponsored Geneva discussions held from July 11 to July 19. Initially, General al-Burhan boycotted the Geneva talks, with only the RSF delegation attending.
However, due to immense political and public backlash, al-Burhan hastily sent a delegation to Geneva last week to participate in the talks.
Dagalo expressed gratitude for the efforts of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland in organizing the vital August talks.
RSF leader emphasized that the shared objective with the international community is to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire across the country, ensure humanitarian access for all those in need, and establish a robust monitoring and verification mechanism to implement any agreements reached.
Dagalo stated that this latest collaborative effort aims to address the extensive suffering and destruction that has plagued the nation since the war broke out in April last year. Echoing the sentiments from Secretary Blinken’s statement, Dagalo highlighted the urgent need to save lives, halt the fighting, and pave the way for a peaceful, negotiated political solution.
“Our goal is to restore civilian rule and embark on a path toward democratic transformation,” Dagalo said. “We are ready to engage constructively in these talks and look forward to them being a significant step towards peace and stability and the establishment of a new Sudanese state based on justice, equality, and federal governance.”
