Ten lions have been found dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with wildlife officials investigating suspected poisoning.
The animals were discovered on September 18 in the Ndutu area of Endulen Ward in northern Tanzania’s Arusha region.
Preliminary findings indicate that the lions may have consumed poison.
However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death.
Tanzania investigates deaths of 10 lions
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority said an investigation had been launched following the discovery.
“Preliminary findings suggest the animals may have died after ingesting poison,” the authority said.
Officials are working to determine the exact cause of the deaths and identify anyone who may have been responsible.
No final findings from the investigation have yet been announced.
Lion deaths raise wildlife concerns
The deaths have raised fresh concerns about threats facing large carnivores in East Africa.
Conflict between predators and livestock owners can pose a threat to lions in areas where wildlife and communities live close to one another.
Poisoning has also been documented as a danger to large carnivores in parts of the region.
However, authorities have not yet established the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the 10 lions in this case.
Ngorongoro is a major wildlife area
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Tanzania’s best-known wildlife destinations.
It is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The conservation area supports a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffaloes and endangered black rhinos.
The investigation into the lions’ deaths is continuing as authorities seek to determine what happened.
