Tanzania marks independence with mass prisoner release

In commemoration of Tanzania’s 63rd Independence Day, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has granted a presidential pardon to 1,548 prisoners.

This act of clemency aims to provide a second chance to individuals who have served their time and are ready to reintegrate into society.

The pardon is a significant gesture that aligns with the spirit of independence and the nation’s commitment to justice and rehabilitation.

By releasing these prisoners, the government hopes to alleviate overcrowding in prisons and offer opportunities for individuals to rebuild their lives.

The presidential pardon is part of the annual Independence Day celebrations, which honor Tanzania’s journey towards freedom and self-determination.

The event commemorates the historic day when Tanganyika gained independence from British colonial rule and subsequently united with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
