Tanzanian officials and WHO enhance efforts to contain Marburg

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working closely with the Tanzanian government to respond to the confirmed Marburg virus outbreak in the northwestern Kagera region.

Following the confirmation of the outbreak, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus met with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu to assess the situation and offer support.

The Tanzanian government has swiftly scaled up its response, enhancing case detection efforts, establishing treatment centers, deploying a mobile laboratory, and mobilizing national response teams.

The WHO has pledged continued support and has released an additional $3 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies to assist in the response efforts.

This announcement follows the Tanzanian government’s confirmation of the Marburg virus outbreak after initial investigations and laboratory analyses of suspected cases.

The WHO is actively collaborating with the Tanzanian government to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
