Tanzanian authorities have apprehended four individuals in connection with a horrific gang rape that was captured on video and widely circulated online.
The disturbing footage sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Police spokesman David Misime confirmed the arrests on Friday, stating that the suspects are believed to have been involved in planning and executing the heinous crime. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities actively searching for two additional suspects who remain at large.
The victim, who has been identified and is currently receiving support services including counseling, is in a safe location.
The incident came to light earlier this week when a social media post by former Ubungo Mayor Boniface Jacob drew attention to the matter.
Jacob tagged President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the national police force, urging swift action.
While rumors circulated about the assailants’ affiliation with the Tanzanian armed forces, these claims have yet to be substantiated.
Beyond the primary suspects, authorities have also detained several individuals for spreading the graphic video or disseminating false information related to the case, including unfounded claims about the victim and her mother’s deaths.
Rights groups and the public have expressed deep concern over the incident and the subsequent online sharing of the video.
Msichana Initiative, an organization advocating for girls’ rights, has condemned the brutality of the attack and called for an end to the video’s circulation.
As investigations continue, Tanzanian authorities are urging the public to exercise restraint and avoid sharing harmful content that could further traumatize the victim and her family.
