The African Union condemned Israel’s attack on the camp in Rafah

Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemned the Israeli military’s attack on the camp where displaced Palestinians in Rafah reside.

In a written statement, Mahamat emphasized their condemnation of the Israeli attack on the camp, predominantly inhabited by women and children who have been displaced.

Calling for an urgent ceasefire, Mahamat stated that Israel’s actions violated the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to halt its military attacks on Rafah.

Mahamat underscored that Israel’s actions have gone unpunished.

The UN’s judicial body, the ICJ, in its provisional measures issued on May 24, ordered Israel to immediately cease its attacks on Rafah, not to impede humanitarian aid, and to allow UN officials investigating their crimes entry into Gaza.

Israel conducted an attack on the tents of displaced Palestinians in the Rafah city of the Gaza Strip on May 26, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 Palestinians, as announced.

Witnesses reported that “the Israeli army’s bombardment caused the destruction and burning of many tents in the camp. The camp is located in the city of Rafah, where thousands of displaced Palestinians reside, and is not in the area that the Israeli army wants evacuated.”

Witnesses also mentioned that Israeli warplanes attacked the camp with at least 8 rockets.
