Tinubu declares emergency in Rivers State, suspends officials

President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Nigeria’s Rivers State Tuesday, citing a prolonged political crisis and governance paralysis.

The decision follows escalating tensions and accusations of misconduct against the state’s elected officials.

Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

The president’s nationwide broadcast highlighted “disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines” and a lack of action by the governor.

He emphasized his commitment to ensuring the safety of Rivers State residents and protecting vital oil infrastructure.

Accusations of gross misconduct, including misappropriation of public funds and obstruction of the House of Assembly’s duties, fueled the crisis.

The Rivers State House of Assembly had previously announced an indefinite recess, preventing the governor from presenting the 2025 budget.

Tinubu’s declaration, based on constitutional provisions for national danger or disaster, aims to restore order.

Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas has been nominated as administrator to manage the state’s affairs during the six-month emergency period.
