Tinubu names new service chiefs in sweeping military overhaul

President Bola Tinubu appointed a new top brass across Nigeria’s armed forces on Friday, a shake-up the presidency said is aimed at reinforcing national security amid insurgency, banditry and separatist violence.

Olufemi Oluyede was tapped as Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa, who took the post shortly after Tinubu assumed office more than two years ago. Major-General W. Shaibu becomes Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke and Rear Admiral I. Abbas take over as Chiefs of Air Staff and Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye remains Chief of Defence Intelligence.

“All appointments take immediate effect,” the presidency said, framing the reshuffle as part of a broader push to recalibrate operations across conflict hotspots in the northeast, northwest and southeast.
