Traore selects new PM following Burkina government shake-up

Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has named Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo as the new prime minister.

The announcement came Saturday, a day after Traoré dissolved the government and dismissed Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela without explanation.

Ouedraogo, a journalist and former communications minister, has been a trusted ally of Traoré since the 2022 coup.

Under Traoré, Burkina Faso has aligned with Mali and Niger, forming the Alliance of Sahel States to combat jihadist violence.

The insurgency, which began in 2012, has killed over 26,000 and displaced two million in Burkina Faso alone.
