The Tunisian Football Federation has appointed experienced French coach Hervé Renard as the new head coach of the national team.
He replaces Sabri Lamouchi, who was dismissed following Tunisia’s 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group F opener on June 15, 2026.
Renard, 57, will lead the team for the remainder of their 2026 World Cup campaign, with his first match in charge scheduled against Japan on June 20, 2026, in Monterrey.
The federation stated that negotiations regarding a potential long-term partnership will take place following the conclusion of the tournament.
Background on the Coaching Change
- The Departure: Sabri Lamouchi, who had been in charge since January 2026, was fired immediately after the heavy loss to Sweden. Under his tenure, Tunisia struggled for form, winning only one of their five matches.Daily Maverick+ 1
- Renard’s Experience: Renard is well-regarded in international football, notably for winning the Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries (Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015). He also famously led Saudi Arabia to a victory over Argentina during the 2022 World Cup group stage.Saudi Gazette+ 1
- Group F Status: Following the opening round of matches, Tunisia currently sits at the bottom of Group F. Sweden leads the group with 3 points, followed by Japan and the Netherlands, who each have 1 point after their 2-2 draw.
