UK Home Secretary fired over Islamophobic remarks on Palestine march

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dismissed Home Secretary Suella Braverman, an Islamophobic minister, following criticism of her comments on the police’s handling of a pro-Palestinian march.

Facing pressure from both opposition MPs and within his Conservative Party, Sunak replaced Braverman with Foreign Minister James Cleverly in a reshuffle.

Braverman, known for accusing the police of “double standards” in an unauthorized article, expressed gratitude for her service.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron unexpectedly returns to government as the new Foreign Secretary, having spent the last seven years in business and writing memoirs.

In a surprising move, Sunak’s office revealed that King Charles approved Cameron’s return to government, granting him a seat in the House of Lords.

The reshuffle anticipates broader changes in the cabinet, as Sunak aims to bring in allies and address ministerial performance issues.

This development occurs just before the government awaits a Supreme Court decision on a key policy—deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Suella Braverman, who served as home secretary since September 2022, faced scrutiny for her comments, leading to her dismissal amidst a larger political realignment.
