The UK government has imposed sanctions on Isabel dos Santos, the wealthy daughter of Angola’s former president, as part of its intensified crackdown on corruption.
The move, announced Thursday, targets dos Santos for alleged embezzlement of over £350 million from state-owned companies.
The funds, it’s claimed, were diverted from vital public services like healthcare and education.
In addition to dos Santos, the UK government has also sanctioned Ukrainian tycoon Dmytro Firtash and Latvian oligarch Aivars Lembergs.
Both individuals are accused of significant corruption and money laundering.
The sanctions will impose travel bans and asset freezes on those targeted.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the UK’s commitment to combating corruption and dismantling safe havens for illicit funds.
He stated, “The golden age of money laundering is over.”
This latest action builds upon the UK’s 2021 anti-corruption sanctions legislation, demonstrating a continued effort to hold corrupt individuals accountable and protect the integrity of the global financial system.
