UK warns Sudan faces the globe’s worst humanitarian disaster

Britain’s Foreign Minister David Lammy stated on Monday that Sudan is facing “the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world” after over two years of war, urging greater international attention.

Lammy, speaking at an event in Morocco, expressed “deep, deep concern” over the crisis.

Since April 2023, the conflict between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of 13 million people, nearly a quarter of Sudan’s population.

The war has also devastated infrastructure and caused famine in some regions.

Lammy lamented the “ambivalence, equivocation and certainly an absence of exposure to this crisis globally, and across much of the Western world.”

He affirmed his commitment as UK foreign secretary to raise awareness about the dire situation in Sudan.
