UN: 15000 Sudanese displaced due to north Darfur clashes

Intense clashes between the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-led troops and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have forced 15,000 households to flee the town of Al-Malha in North Darfur, the UN migration agency reported Monday.

Describing the situation as “tense and unpredictable,” the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said residents fled to surrounding areas between March 20 and 21.

Al-Malha, located 200 kilometers from El-Fasher, is a vital supply route linking Sudan’s western regions with the north and east.

The violence has taken a deadly toll.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating conflict between Burhan’s army and RSF.

The UN and local authorities estimate the war has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million.

However, research from US universities suggests the death toll may be closer to 130,000.

The international community has repeatedly called for an end to the war, warning of a looming humanitarian catastrophe.

As the conflict rages on, famine and death from food shortages threaten millions across 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
