UN, African Union sign historic human rights pact

The United Nations and the African Union have reinforced their partnership.

A framework agreement on human rights was signed between UN Secretary-General António Guterres and AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.

The two leaders underscored the need to reform the global financial architecture.

Mr. Guterres said that Africa has been the victim of structural injustices in international relations.

Mr. Faki said that Africa is facing economic challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the war in Ukraine.

He stressed that financing for both development and peace is critical.

Mr. Faki said that the COP28 climate conference must be an opportunity to advocate for Africa.

Mr. Guterres said that Africa remains a key UN priority.

He said that the continent has been the double victim of injustice.

He said that countries cannot respond to the basic needs of their populations, leading to frustration and instability.

He called for peace enforcement and counterterrorism operations in Africa.

Mr. Guterres said that the international community must address the economic and social root causes of conflicts.
