The United Nations refugee agency warned on Friday that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is rapidly deteriorating due to the onset of the El Nino rainy season.
The ongoing conflict, which has displaced millions, is now compounded by severe flooding and displacement.
UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado highlighted the dire conditions faced by refugees and internally displaced people.
She reported that tens of thousands have already been affected by heavy rains and flooding, leading to casualties and further displacement.
The situation is particularly dire in Kassala state, where over 11,000 people, including refugees and locals, have been impacted in the past two weeks.
Sarrado expressed deep concern over the damage to refugee shelters, with over 400 in Shagarab camp rendered uninhabitable.
UNHCR is working to establish a new site to accommodate the displaced families, with initial efforts focused on erecting emergency shelters.
While some families have been relocated, the agency is preparing for increased rainfall in other regions and is distributing essential supplies to affected communities.
The spokesperson emphasized the challenges posed by flooding in the Darfur region, hindering humanitarian aid delivery to those in desperate need.
UNHCR has launched a regional appeal for $40 million to support millions affected by the crisis but has received only a fraction of the required funding.
As the rainy season progresses, the UN agency anticipates further challenges and is urging the international community to provide increased support to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
