The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has condemned the escalating violence in El Fasher City, North Darfur, which has led to a humanitarian crisis.
“The ongoing attacks on civilians, their property, and essential facilities are utterly reprehensible,” Nkweta-Salami stated.
“These acts violate international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.”
Initial reports indicate that large-scale fighting erupted in El Fasher on September 12, endangering the lives of thousands, particularly those living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
Healthcare facilities were also targeted, leading to concerns about the number of civilian casualties.
The conflict has had a devastating impact on the region, with El Fasher serving as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of IDPs.
The city is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, including the threat of famine in camps like Zamzam.
Sudan’s public health system has also been crippled by the ongoing conflict, with many healthcare facilities destroyed, looted, or abandoned.
This has left over five million people without access to essential healthcare services.
“These attacks highlight the senselessness of the armed violence in El Fasher,” Nkweta-Salami emphasized.
“All parties to the conflict must adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law and protect civilians from harm.”
