UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning on Monday regarding the worsening situation in Sudan.
He stated that the people in the conflict-torn country are “living through a nightmare of violence.”
Guterres addressed the UN Security Council, highlighting that 18 months have passed since fighting erupted.
The conflict involves Burhan-controlled SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He noted that the suffering in Sudan “is growing by the day,” affecting nearly 25 million people in need of aid.
The toll on civilians is dire, with thousands killed and many facing horrific atrocities.
He reported shocking instances of mass killings and sexual violence occurring in villages in eastern Sudan. The UN chief stressed the urgent need for intervention to alleviate this escalating crisis.
In addition to violence, Guterres described the severe food crisis affecting the population. Over 750,000 people are facing catastrophic food insecurity, particularly in displacement sites in North Darfur. Millions struggle daily to feed themselves amid worsening conditions.
The Secretary-General also pointed out health crises fueled by conflict.
Outbreaks of cholera, malaria, and other diseases are spreading in a country with collapsed infrastructure. Health, sanitation, and transportation systems in Sudan have virtually halted.
