Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday welcomed a draft final agreement signed in Libya, calling it a step toward ending years of political paralysis.
“The agreement marks an important step in advancing Libya towards national elections and ending the transitional period,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters.
The deal addresses the first two milestones of the UN’s political roadmap, restructuring the election commission and resolving disputed election laws.
The 4+4 Small Dialogue Committee, representing rival governments in Tripoli and eastern Libya, finalized the draft agreement on Sunday.
The signing ceremony unfolded at UN mission headquarters in Tripoli, drawing ambassadors and lawmakers from Libya’s fractured legislature.
Dhaou Ibrahim Attia was named chairman of the election commission, with Sana al-Lishani appointed his deputy.
Guterres urged all parties to implement the accord in good faith, saying diplomacy still holds the power to break deadlocks.
