A group of United Nations experts has issued a scathing report criticizing the treatment of migrants, refugees, and human trafficking victims in Tunisia.
The experts allege a pattern of human rights violations, including violence, forced transfers, and dangerous sea rescue operations.
According to the report, numerous individuals have lost their lives during attempted Mediterranean crossings and interceptions at sea.
Those who are “rescued” often face further mistreatment upon disembarkation, including arbitrary transfers to remote border areas and exposure to harsh conditions.
The experts expressed particular concern about the situation of children and pregnant women, who are reportedly subjected to abuse, exploitation, and violence.
They also highlighted the involvement of criminal gangs in human trafficking activities.
The UN experts urged Tunisia to address these serious allegations and ensure that migrants and refugees are treated in accordance with international human rights law.
They called for an independent investigation into the reported abuses and for the government to take immediate steps to protect the rights of vulnerable individuals.
