UN Human Rights Council launches mission on Congo violations

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has launched a fact-finding mission to investigate severe human rights violations in eastern Congo.

The Council convened a special session in Geneva, responding to escalating concerns over atrocities in North and South Kivu provinces.

The Congolese government submitted a draft resolution urging an independent investigation into the widespread violence and humanitarian crisis gripping the region.

Member states and observers engaged in deliberations, assessing the urgency of the situation and the necessity for an impartial inquiry.

As discussions concluded, UNHRC President Jurg Lauber confirmed that no objections had been raised, allowing the resolution to pass without a formal vote.

This development marks a significant step in addressing human rights abuses and ensuring accountability for crimes committed in the conflict-ridden provinces.
