UN reports mass displacement in southern Sudan due to fighting

Thousands of people have fled Um Rawaba town in southern Sudan following intense clashes between the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-controlled SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict, which began in mid-April 2023, has displaced millions of Sudanese and plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that between 1,000 and 3,000 households have been displaced from Um Rawaba in just five days due to the escalating violence.

Clashes have intensified in recent weeks, with the army advancing on the central Sudan state of Al-Jazira.

Over 205,000 people are currently displaced in North Kordofan, and the overall number of internally displaced persons across Sudan exceeds 11.5 million.

The conflict has also led to a severe food crisis, with famine conditions declared in five areas and the risk of famine spreading to many more.

The UN has emphasized that only a ceasefire can alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and prevent the further spread of famine.
