The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that more than 114,000 people have been displaced in Sudan in the past week.
According to OCHA’s report on humanitarian developments in Sudan, the ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April has led to the displacement of approximately 5.3 million people from their homes within the country or to neighbouring countries.
The report states, “Inside Sudan, over 4.2 million people have been displaced to 3,929 locations in all 18 states,” adding that this includes approximately 114,700 people who were displaced in the past week alone.
OCHA mentioned that “more than one million people crossed into neighbouring countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Chad, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.”
The report also highlighted that “the humanitarian appeal led by the United Nations is suffering from funding shortages, with only about 31% of the required funding available.”
On May 17th of the previous year, the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies launched an appeal for approximately $2.6 billion to fund the humanitarian response plan in Sudan.
