UN strengthens presence in West Africa with new Senegal headquarters

Senegal’s President Macky Sall inaugurated the United Nations regional headquarters, housing all UN operations in the country, in Diamniadio, 30 kilometers from Dakar.

Attended by the presidential couple of Romania, the event marks Senegal’s contribution to the UN’s strategy of enhancing collaboration among its entities for operational development activities.

The 13-hectare site, built by a Senegalese private company at a cost of $291 million, will accommodate the 2,400 employees from 34 UN entities currently based in Senegal. The facility, dedicated to West and Central Africa, aims to improve collaboration and efficiency in UN operations.

President Sall emphasized the significance of the new headquarters in advancing cooperation and shared visions between Senegal and the UN.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohamed, expressed gratitude to the Senegalese government and President Sall for their vision, considering the United Nations House as a concrete manifestation of collaboration.

The initiative is seen as crucial for achieving future peace, dignity, and prosperity for Senegal and the broader region.

The inauguration reflects Senegal’s commitment to supporting the UN’s regional strategy, fostering a more cohesive and effective approach to development activities.
