The United Nations has called on South Sudan’s top leaders to meet and reaffirm their commitment to peace, warning of the risk of renewed civil war.
Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), urged President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar to take immediate action to prevent further military escalation.
“We encourage the President and First Vice President to lead efforts to prevent further military confrontation and restore calm,” Haysom stated.
He emphasized the need for both leaders to meet, resolve their differences, and issue a joint statement reassuring the nation of their dedication to peace.
Tensions in South Sudan have been rising amid political discord and sporadic clashes between rival factions.
The fragile peace agreement signed in 2018 remains under strain, with delays in implementing key provisions fueling uncertainty.
The UN’s call underscores growing international concern over South Sudan’s stability, as the country continues to recover from years of devastating conflict.
