UN urges Uganda to investigate Besigye’s abduction

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on the Ugandan government to release opposition politician Kizza Besigye. 

Besigye was reportedly abducted in Kenya.   

Türk expressed deep concern over the incident, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction. 

He emphasized the urgent need to end the practice of abducting Ugandan opposition leaders and supporters.   

Additionally, Türk condemned the ongoing trend of prosecuting civilians in military courts in Uganda, highlighting its detrimental impact on human rights.
