UNICEF calls Sudan war a crisis with 1.3M children facing famine

The war in Sudan has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 30 million people needing aid, including 16 million children, the U.N. warned Thursday.

UNICEF chief Catherine Russell told the U.N. Security Council that Sudanese children face “unimaginable suffering,” with 1.3 million in famine-stricken areas and 770,000 at risk of severe malnutrition.

The conflict erupted in April 2023 between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-led army and the Rapid Support Forces, killing at least 20,000 people and displacing 14 million.

Russell reported an 80% rise in sexual violence, affecting 12.1 million people. Doctors Without Borders accused both sides of targeting civilians, bombing towns, and blocking aid.

Despite past resolutions, the U.N. has failed to enforce action. The U.S. announced emergency aid waivers, but details remain unclear. UNICEF says $1 billion is needed to support 8.7 million children.

As the war rages on, millions remain in desperate need of global intervention.
