UNICEF raises alarm over child abductions in northern Mozambique

UNICEF has expressed deep concern over reports of child abductions in Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique, warning that the incidents represent serious violations of children’s rights.

In a statement published on social media, the UN children’s agency urged the immediate release of all abducted children to ensure their safe return to their families and communities.

UNICEF said the abductions, reportedly carried out by non-state armed groups, constitute grave breaches of international law and place already vulnerable children at extreme risk.

The agency said it is working alongside the Mozambican government and humanitarian partners to prevent further abductions, support affected families, and strengthen child protection services. It also called on all parties involved in the conflict to prioritise the safety, rights, and wellbeing of children.

The warning comes as Mozambique continues to grapple with severe flooding, which has affected more than 720,000 people across the country. The floods have caused widespread damage to roads, schools, health facilities, and other critical infrastructure, with at least 22 deaths reported so far, according to media.
