UN’s Haavisto meets Sudanese leader Dagalo amid crisis resolution talks

United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said envoy Pekka Haavisto met Sudanese leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who heads the Presidential Council of the TASIS-backed Government of Peace and Unity, as part of ongoing efforts to ease the country’s escalating conflict.

The meeting took place within preliminary consultations led by the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, aimed at exploring political options to reduce tensions and strengthen civilian protection.

Dujarric described the talks as constructive, saying they allowed both sides to exchange views on ways to curb violence and prevent further deterioration in vulnerable communities.

During the discussions, Haavisto received a briefing from Dagalo on military developments since the outbreak of war and the evolving role of the Rapid Support Forces within governing structures.

Dagalo outlined his forces’ responses to international peace initiatives, highlighting proposals supporting humanitarian ceasefires to ease civilian suffering nationwide.

The talks focused on identifying steps to scale down military operations while creating space for diplomacy and coordinated humanitarian access in conflict-affected regions.

Participants also reviewed the worsening humanitarian situation, as displacement, food shortages and insecurity continue to deepen hardships for millions.

The United Nations views these consultations as an early step toward restoring dialogue and seeking openings for peace amid Sudan’s prolonged crisis.
