US air strike kills 10 al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia

The United States military conducted an airstrike in southern Somalia on December 31, resulting in the deaths of 10 Al-Shabaab militants, according to US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

The airstrike, conducted at the request of the Somali government, targeted Al-Shabaab fighters near the port city of Kismayo.

AFRICOM emphasized that initial assessments indicate no civilian casualties.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, has been waging an insurgency against the Somali government for over 17 years, posing a significant security threat to the country.

This airstrike comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Somali government to combat Al-Shabaab, including a major offensive launched earlier this year.

The United States has been a key partner in the fight against Al-Shabaab, providing military and logistical support to the Somali government.
