US bid to withdraw Niger troops rejected by Senate

The US Senate decisively dismissed a bill on Thursday that aimed to compel President Joe Biden to withdraw American troops from Niger, the West African nation currently under the control of military authorities following a coup in July.

The resounding rejection, with a notable 86-11 vote, underscored the Senate’s position regarding the US troop presence in Niger.

Although the United States formally acknowledged the military coup earlier this month, prompting the suspension of official aid, authorities clarified that there were no imminent plans to alter the existing deployment of US forces in the region.

This development unfolded amid ongoing discussions within the US government about the appropriate response to the political situation in Niger and its implications for the broader stability of the region.
