US condemns M23 ceasefire violations in DR Congo

The United States has voiced serious concerns over the recent ceasefire violations in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo by the M23 rebel group.

In a statement released on Friday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller condemned the actions of the M23 and urged them to immediately cease hostilities and withdraw from their positions in Walikale territory, North Kivu Province.

Miller also reiterated the US call for Rwanda to immediately withdraw all Rwandan Defense Force personnel and equipment from Congo, including surface-to-air missile systems.

The M23, a Tutsi-led group, has been involved in a renewed insurgency in eastern Congo since 2022.

Both the Congolese government and the United Nations have accused Rwanda of supporting the group with military aid, a claim that Rwanda has consistently denied.
