The US embassy in Niger has condemned what it described as a terrorist attack targeting Niamey’s international airport and a nearby military base, warning that the assault endangered civilians and undermined national security.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the embassy said the overnight attack, which took place between 28 and 29 January, struck critical infrastructure at Diori Hamani International Airport and an adjacent military facility in the Nigerien capital.
The embassy said such attacks threaten the safety of civilians and those involved in supporting stability and security across the country, adding that the violence weakens peace, development and efforts to build a more secure and prosperous future.
The US expressed solidarity with the people and authorities of Niger, reiterating its opposition to terrorism and violent extremism in all forms.
No further information was provided regarding casualties, damage, or those responsible for the attack.
Niger has faced sustained violence from armed groups for more than a decade, particularly in its western and south-eastern regions. Several of these groups operate across the Sahel, including factions linked to al Qaeda.
