The United States said early Friday that the warring parties in Sudan must end the “brutal conflict,” during a meeting between Molly Phee, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Phee said, “I took the chance opportunity of seeing General Burhan to emphasize what the United States has been saying for more than five months: The warring parties must end this brutal conflict. The Sudanese people deserve freedom, peace, and justice.”
Al-Burhan said in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly’s 78th session, “We are working by all means to stop this war and respond to all initiatives presented by our brothers.”
Since mid-April, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in ongoing conflict, and a series of ceasefires have failed to halt the violence, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths, mostly civilians, and over 5 million internally displaced people and refugees.
