US warns Sudan’s SAF against ‘military-first’ approach

The United States said it is gravely concerned by recent messaging from Sudan’s SAF leadership that prioritises a military route to ending the conflict and attaches conditions to any potential truce.

In comments posted on X, State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said SAF commanders should move toward peace as tens of millions of people face hardship, rather than prolonging the war.

Pigott said an enduring settlement would require negotiated steps that stop violence immediately, open the way for sustained humanitarian access, and establish a clear track toward a lasting ceasefire and a civilian-led political dialogue.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced more than 11 million people, according to international estimates. The United Nations has repeatedly described the situation as the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis.
