Previously scheduled rounds of voting in Mali, set for February 4 and 18, 2024, will be postponed according to a government spokesperson, Abdoulaye Maiga.
An official statement on Monday attributed the delay to “technical reasons.”
Maiga explained that these reasons encompass issues related to the adoption of a new constitution this year and a review of the electoral lists.
Additionally, he mentioned a dispute involving the French company Idemia, which the junta claims is involved in the census process.
The specific dates for the rescheduled presidential election will be announced later, he stated.
Authorities have also decided not to organize legislative elections, originally planned for the end of 2023, before the presidential election.
The statement from the leadership explicitly states that they will exclusively conduct the presidential election and other elections will follow a schedule “determined by the new authorities under the guidance of the new president.”
