WFP says food aid for 1.4 million in Chad in danger of stopping

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Tuesday that food assistance to 1.4 million individuals in Chad, including newly displaced refugees escaping violence in Sudan’s Darfur region, will be halted in January due to a lack of funding.

Due to financial constraints and escalating humanitarian demands, the WFP has announced the suspension of aid to internally displaced persons and refugees from Nigeria, the Central African Republic, and Cameroon starting from December.

Starting in January, the reduction in aid will also affect individuals facing crises in Chad, as per the statement from WFP.

The International Organization for Migration reports that over 540,000 refugees have fled from Sudan to Chad within the last seven months due to the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Numerous individuals have escaped from West Darfur, where ethnic violence and widespread killings resurged earlier this month in the state capital, El Geneina, leading to the displacement of thousands more.

“It is staggering but more Darfuris have fled to Chad in the last six months than in the preceding 20 years,” said Pierre Honnorat, WFP’s Chad country director.

“We cannot let the world stand and allow our life-saving operations grind to a halt in Chad.”

The WFP stated that it needs $185 million to sustain support for individuals in Chad over the next six months.
