WHO to convene emergency committee on mpox outbreak in Congo

The World Health Organization (WHO) will convene an emergency committee to evaluate whether the ongoing mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Wednesday.

Since the start of 2023, the outbreak in the DRC has resulted in approximately 27,000 cases and over 1,100 deaths, with a significant number of the fatalities being children.
