Woman in Kenya arrested for allegedly throwing baby into ocean

Kenyan authorities have arrested a woman accused of throwing her eight-month-old baby into the Indian Ocean on Sunday, as reported by witnesses to local media. Allegedly, the incident occurred when the woman purportedly tossed the infant from a ferry as it approached the dock in Mombasa, a coastal town.

A video capturing divers rescuing the baby circulated widely on social media, sparking widespread condemnation toward the woman and relief over the baby’s rescue.

“[She] was rushed for first aid at the Red Cross Centre, treated and discharged in fair condition and her mother taken to the police station for interrogation,” privately-owned K24 and Citizen TV have both reported, citing the police report of the incident.

Previously, the Kenya Red Cross had confirmed the infant’s safety at their rescue center.

The specific charges against the woman have yet to be disclosed at this time.
