Zimbabwean bus overturns in South Africa, killing five

A tragic week of road accidents in South Africa has claimed the lives of at least 32 people. The latest incident occurred on Sunday evening when a bus traveling from Zimbabwe overturned in northeastern Limpopo province, killing five passengers.

Four men and one woman lost their lives in the crash, which authorities believe may have been caused by driver fatigue. Dozens of other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

This marks the second fatal bus accident in the province within a week. Earlier this week, another bus from Zimbabwe overturned in Limpopo, resulting in 10 deaths and 35 injuries.

In addition to the bus accidents, a head-on collision in KwaZulu-Natal province on Saturday claimed the lives of at least 11 people. A separate incident in the same province involved a minibus carrying supporters of the opposition uMkhonto weSizwe party, resulting in the deaths of six passengers.

South Africa’s road safety record has long been a concern, with reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles contributing to the high number of fatalities. Local officials have expressed particular concern about cross-border bus operators and urged companies to ensure that their drivers are adequately trained and prepared for the long journeys.
